SDSU Accessibility Statement
As part of our commitment to excellence through diversity and inclusion, San Diego State University (SDSU) strives to ensure that campus communication and information technology is accessible to everyone.
The Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990 (ADA) and Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973 (504) require that qualified individuals be provided equal access to programs, services, and activities. California Government Code 11135 applies Section 508 of the 1973 Rehabilitation Act, as amended in 1998, to state entities and to the California State University (CSU) system. Section 508 of the Rehabilitation Act was enacted to eliminate barriers in information technology, to make new opportunities available to people with disabilities and to encourage development of technologies that will help achieve these goals. The California State University system statement on accessibility is articulated in Executive Order 1111.
Below are the compliance standards used in support of the federal and state legislation as well as CSU policy:
- Section 508 of the U.S. Rehabilitation Act, as revised in 2017
- California State University Accessible Technology Initiative Accessibility Requirements (these are a combination of Section 508 and WCAG 2.0)
Key Accessibility Features Include
- Alternative text descriptions for meaningful non-text elements, including captions for videos.
- Access that does not require the use of a mouse.
- Information that is not dependent on color for meaning, and sufficient contrast between colored elements.
- Legible text that can be increased (or decreased) in size.
- Structural presentation to identify headings and lists.
- Association of form fields with proper labels.
- Association of all data cells in a data table with column and row headers.
Campus administrative staff are trained on compliance standards.
IT Division reviews enterprise level information technology products purchased, promoted, or supported by campus. Such reviews may include extensive testing and/or collaboration with vendors as appropriate.
Siteimprove is used to conduct regular tests and to report problems regarding the accessibility and usability of web applications within the SDSU web environment. Additional manual testing is conducted as needed based on the findings.
